"My daughter’s face reminded me of what they say about Moshe’s face coming down from Har Sinai, it was radiating, shining from within.”

At TAL TORAH, Bat Mitzvah education is an exciting and dynamic process of intellectual, emotional and spiritual awakening. A young woman is taking her place within the historic and eternal Jewish people. She deserves, requires even, a journey of self-discovery and learning that will help her emerge knowledgeable, responsible and deeply rooted in her Jewish identity. We want each young woman to feel ready and eager to be part of the community that welcomes and celebrates her coming of age. |
Because Bat Mitzvah education occurs at the threshold of this new awareness, it is a special opportunity to introduce young women to the kind of Torah study that opens the doors of inner perception and educates the heart as well as the mind. Rav Saadia Gaon wrote: “Our nation is only a nation in its Torah.” As the common language of our people, Torah has the power to resonate in the heart of our daughters, inspiring individuality while uniting the young woman with her community.
Students at TAL TORAH often begin with an in-depth study of their Torah portions and/or other topics. Students write their own divrei Torah and share this learning with their community. Students may learn to read Torah, Haftorah and the Megillot as well as lead their community in prayer. Custom designing each student’s learning program, we are able to accommodate and enhance each student’s individual learning style and support their search for meaning and connection to the Jewish people.
TAL TORAH’s innovation has been to invite mothers to study with their daughters in preparation for the Bat Mitzvah. This brings Torah discussion into the home. Both daughters and mothers delight in the shared exploration of Torah text and Jewish values that depends and strengthens their relationship. Often, they want to continue their studies together. The Bat Mitzvah program thus hopes to lay the foundation for a lifetime of intergenerational Torah learning within the family.
TAL TORAH offers Bat Mitzvah classes in Hebrew and English. Our small and personalized class settings are particularly suited to young men and women with special needs.
“In TAL TORAH, we live Torah, it becomes part of our lives. Studying for Bat Mitzvah is not a rushed process; it’s a building process. You educate al pi darkah (according to each student’s individual path) and get at the essence of each person and bring out the desire to grow with the community. It’s for life, not just a Bat Mitzvah!”
